The To-Don't List

3/31/2013

I read an article shared by my friend Yana on Darling Magazine about a To-DON'T List. That's right, a to-don't list. There are to-do lists and there are to-don'ts. Your to-don't list can be your list of many things like fashion to-don'ts, general to-don'ts, to-don't ever etc but the to-don't list I'm talking about is the same as the one mentioned in the article I linked.

In this day and age where overachievers are getting younger and younger, it's hard to not want to do everything and cram everything just to be (or even feel) accomplished. I don't see anything wrong with that though, but being pressured to do well all the time, be perfect all the time and check things off your to-do list as you keep adding stuff on to it is just madness. The list just doesn't get any shorter.

So, in line with this as well as Easter (which connotes resurrection or turning over a new leaf), I've made my own to-don't list of the things or traits I will stop giving myself a hard time over.

1) I'm not a thoughtful person. I'm just not the gift-giving type of girl and I lack initiative a lot of times, but I'm the type of friend who's generous with her time. I'm done beating myself up for not being able to give material gifts or for not being creative enough to think of surprises; this is the way I love.

2) I am not approachable. I sometimes hate myself for this. Like, Why am I so shyyy, Why can't I approach people first, etc (my dad tells me I should "get off my high horse" but there is honestly no high horse, only shyness) but I'm done questioning myself. I'm shy but if you talk to me first I will acknowledge you, and if you get to really know me, I'm loud and jologs. =))

3) I'm not a trendy person. I'm not gonna beat myself up for not being "fashionable" according to what people deem is fashionable or trendy. I'm not gonna defend myself when people ask, "Why does she call herself a fashion blogger? She dresses so normal!" I like fashion and I like writing about it, I think that's enough reason.

On another (related) note,

4) I'm not the typical blogger. I'm not skinny and I don't have the latest clothes. I don't have lots of hypes, sponsors, page views and followers but is that the basis now for being called a fashion blogger? If that's a basis for blogging, then we're blogging for all the wrong reasons aren't we? I blog to share my life, thoughts and outfits. I blog for self-expression. I blog to make friends. Instead of focusing of what I (or we) obviously lack, I am going to embrace wholly who I am, good days and bad.

shoes: overused SM Parisian loafers

5) I don't always finish everything I've started. This is kind of a bad trait of mine because I tend to flit from one interest to another and as a result, I never really actually accomplish something toward my goal. Take my going to the gym for example. I think I am just never gonna be the kind of person who has her life mapped out for her, but it's okay. I will wing it. I still do have an idea of what woman I want to be.

"I didn't always know what I wanted to do,
but I knew the kind of woman I wanted to be"
--Diane von Furstenburg

Anyway, I don't think I've ever posted this hoodie on my blog. So for the sake of connecting the part wherein I mentioned going to the gym and for the sake of posting it, ta-daah! My lazy outfit/uniform. Not gonna apologize for that.

Anyway, I really would love to hear what are on your to-don't lists!! So hit me up, what are the traits or things about yourself you'll stop giving yourself a hard time on?

  1. I really like the concept of the to don't list, I'v never heard of them before. I really like the ones you put on there, I can relate to almost all of them especially the not being approachable and it being because your shy, I totally feel yeah on that one.

  2. Lol, Love it! It's tiring when people try to push you into something you are just not. I definitely get some of these, mine would be I will never be the "bubbly coffee girls" no matter how hard I tried even if I wanted to. I like your bag and shoes by the way.

    1. Thank you Cheriz! I love reading your comments, by the way. It makes me feel loved cause I know you read through the entire entry. :) Yeah, I agree. I feel like I also won't be one of those bubbly coffee girls (if what I'm thinking is also what you're thinking haha)

  3. I like reading your thoughts, and I also feel the same way about fashion blogging. Some fashion bloggers just wanted to show off what they have in their cabinets, not really what their brain and heart have about fashion.

    Much love from Mystic Nymph
